High-altitude construction site: the Pedrotti Hut

The Pedrotti Mountain Hut, the oldest in the Brenta Dolomites, stands at an elevation of 2,491 meters in a high-mountain setting of extraordinary environmental and scenic value. It is a symbolic place, deeply rooted in the history of mountaineering and high-altitude hospitality, which over time has required conservation efforts to preserve its heritage.

The structural design by Moser Associati called for an expansion of the building’s volume,the modernization of its systems, andcompliance with safety regulations, with the aim of improving the comfort and usability of the mountain hut while preserving its historical identity and delicate balance with the surrounding natural environment.

The work carried out using Tassullo systems focused in particular on the restoration and protection of the facades. To preserve the aesthetic appeal of the historic exposed stone masonry, specific restoration products were used that were chemically and color-compatible. Due to the shelter’s unique location, in direct contact with the rock, it was necessary to apply HYDRO BARRIER injections—a hydroalcoholic solution used to create a water-repellent chemical barrier—which is ideal for limiting the rise and infiltration of moisture within the masonry.

On the stone masonry, the joints have been repaired with FORTE CALCE, a product highly resistant to degradation and the extreme conditions imposed by high altitude, ideal for the localized repair of masonry elements in restoration contexts where maximum compatibility with historic materials is required. A precise and respectful intervention, aimed at restoring the continuity and stability of the masonry without altering its original characteristics. The masonry was then repaired with LITHOS PLUS, a Breathable protective coating based on oligomeric siloxanes that extends the life of stones and joints without masking their natural colors. Thanks to its low viscosity and high penetration capacity, the active ingredient penetrates deep into porous materials, ensuring long-lasting protection. The product does not affect the substrate’s breathability and ensures excellent resistance to UV rays, essential characteristics in a high-altitude environment.

In an environment exposed to extreme weather conditions, significant temperature fluctuations, and constant stress, the use of natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5) solutions proves to be an ideal choice for ensuring compatibility and durability, while fully respecting the building’s historical character and structural requirements.
