Tassullo designs and builds custom underground spaces within its active mine, TERA, to support organizations seeking to innovate sustainably and contribute to a regeneration project for the area.

TERA, from the Greek τέρας: a portentous thing; a prefix that, when placed before the name of a unit of measurement, multiplies its value—expresses the conscious and ambitious process that makes Tassullo a multiplier of space, resources, and opportunities, and becomes a metaphor for common ground, a meeting point between different needs but shared intentions.

This project stands as a flagship of the company’s values and vision and enables Tassullo to develop significant synergies with companies in other sectors. Today, the TERA facilities house warehouses for apples, wine, and cheese and are home to Intacture, a state-of-the-art data center surrounded by millions of cubic meters of rock.

Every piece of rock is transformed into aggregate, ready for use in construction and restoration. The new space, created by mining activities, offers ideal conditions for storing various types of goods, thanks to a constant temperature of approximately 12 degrees and the complete absence of water infiltration.

TERA'S FEATURES:

Design by Design
Tassullo designs and builds custom underground spaces for companies that want to reduce their environmental impact and integrate into the TERA mining ecosystem
Energy and Soil Conservation
Rock acts as a natural insulator, regulates temperature due to thermal inertia, and eliminates the disposal costs associated with traditional insulators
Naturally Protected Environment
A layer of impermeable marl protects TERA from water infiltration and ensures dry environments with a constant temperature of 12°C
Maximum security
Due to its structure, the mining ecosystem is a location with a high level of physical security (seismic, hydrogeological) and natural electromagnetic protection
12°C
Constant temperature
275m
Maximum depth from ground level
>15 km
Current extent of TERA

This important example of a circular economy has been made possible thanks to a regulatory provision of the Autonomous Province of Trento, which allows—exclusively within the province’s territory—the construction of structures within the quarry perimeter intended for the storage of agricultural products or for other economic or noneconomic activities.

Intacture is the first data center in Europe located in the heart of an active mine: an infrastructure protected from hydrogeological and electromagnetic hazards, promoting research and development of advanced technological solutions.

Starting in 2021, the Cavit Group—an exemplary organization that brings together several social wineries in the area—will take advantage of the mine’s unique geological characteristics to store approximately 2.5 million bottles of the premium Altemasi Trento DOC brand. The bottles of classic-method sparkling wine are located in the heart of the mountain at a depth of more than 270 meters, where they find ideal conditions for aging for 24 months.

Melinda, a leading consortium in the fruit and vegetable sector, considers its underground spaces to be its largest warehouse, with a storage capacity of 40,000 metric tons of apples. Tassullo designed the dolomite quarry to create chambers carved directly into the rock, which not only preserve the fruit’s organoleptic characteristics but also significantly reduce energy costs and conserve surface soil.

Trentingrana Concast launched a project in 2022 for the underground storage and aging of the hard cheese wheels that symbolize Trentino’s excellence. Given the extremely positive results of the initial tests, the number of wheels has now increased from 160 at the start of the experiment to about 1,200, which are protected by 80,000 cubic meters of rock.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where is TERA located?

Nestled in the foothills of Val di Non, Trentino, lies a surprising place: Tera, the mining ecosystem of Tassullo, an underground world where human ingenuity meets the depths of nature.

Is it possible to visit TERA?

TERA is not currently open to the public, but we organize exclusive guided tours for journalists, industry professionals, and organizations interested in collaborations, technical insights, or shared visions. To request a visit, please contact us by emailing marketing@tassullo.it

Are you looking for a sustainable space where you can grow your project?

The TERA mining ecosystem—created by Tassullo—is a place that welcomes ideas and projects. If you have innovative ideas or business proposals to share, please contact us by emailing marketing@tassullo.it to tell us about your idea.

For how many years can dolomite be mined from the active TERA mine?

Studies and surveys show that the dolomite outcrop consists of approximately 80 million cubic meters of rock, and currently only 5 percent of it has been affected by Tassullo's mining operations.

TERA is a living, breathing ecosystem where ordinary rock is transformed into opportunity every day, making room for ever-new regeneration projects.
