Lakefront Residence: A Balance Between History and Modernity

Overlooking Lake Caldonazzo in Trentino, the restoration of this residence was driven by a desire to preserve the historic character of the existing masonry while introducing a contemporary style that emphasizes the health and sustainability of the spaces through the use of local raw materials.

Tassullo products are made using rocks from the region: the binder used is natural hydraulic lime (NHL 5), derived from the firing of Trentino red flakes; dolomite extracted from the TERA mining ecosystem is used as aggregate.

Part of the building retains its historic exposed masonry, bearing witness to the original character of the site. The irregular and dynamic stonework tells the story of the building’s construction and maintains its connection to the landscape. The use of T 20 V as mortar for laying and pointing bricks allows for a high-quality finish, is resistant to salts, and ensures full compatibility with the substrate.

This structure is flanked by a renovated section, characterized by continuous surfaces finished with CALCE FINE CALCE MEDIA finishes. The choice of a mineral-based solution has ensured material consistency with the historic portion, while establishing a more minimalist and contemporary aesthetic. For the exteriors—as seen in the photo where the wall runs alongside the staircase—the CALCE MEDIA shade was selected.

The large windows frame the view of the lake, allowing natural light to flood deep into the rooms. The high ceilings, accentuated by exposed wooden beams, enhance the sense of space and create a balance between structure and lightness.

Breathability and compatibility with the substrates guided the design decisions in a project focused on preserving the existing structure. In a lakeside setting characterized by high humidity, the durability of the finishes and their water-repellent properties are essential requirements for ensuring long-term protection without altering the hygrometric behavior of the walls.
